About this artwork Giovanni Canaletto, a well known Italian painter from the Venetian Republic, was best known for his urban landscapes of Venice, Rome, and London. Among his many works, Canaletto created numerous portrayals of Venice's Grand Canal, one of which is 'The Grand Canal at the Salute Church.' This piece highlights the Santa Maria della Salute, a Roman Catholic Church constructed in 1681. The church was built as a tribute to 'Salute' (Our Lady of Health) after a severe plague epidemic wreaked havoc on the city.
